It’s amazing how many people create a product without finding out how many people are likely to want to buy it, or build a great web site that no one is actually interested in visiting.
It sounds pretty basic, but it really is a common mistake made by a lot of wannabe marketers.
Answer this question …
If you wanted to sell hamburgers, what would guarantee you make a lot of sales?
- top quality burgers? - a great brand name? - a well designed restaurant?
How about access to a “starving crowd” ?
Before you worry about designing a web site or creating a ground breaking product, you need to be sure that there are lots of people actively looking for it!
Now back to the starving crowd analogy…
The “hungrier” the people looking for your site or product are, the better! In fact, what you are really hunting for when you do your market research, are people who are literally “desperate”! If someone is desperate for a solution to a problem, they will be much more likely to take drastic action to get what they need, and in our case, that means parting with cash in exchange for what they are looking for!
So what groups of “surfers” might be classed as “desperate”?
Ok … it’s pot of gold time …
The following groups of people are ready to give you their money … literally!
AIM YOUR WEB SITES AT THE NEEDS OF THESE PEOPLE AND YOU WILL MAKE MONEY!
Is it ‘ethical’ to exploit these groups? It depends on whether you are offering them a real solution to their problem or not … if you are then no, if you aren’t then yes!
Now you have some ideas for markets that you may be able to exploit and make money in, but these categories of people are way too general!
IMPORTANT: You need to target specific problems within those groups, you need to identify ‘niche’ market opportunities.
The more targeted your starving crowd is, the easier it will be to make money from them.
I’m now about to tell you the “best method” for online market research I have come across … ever! There are lots of ways you can research a market, but the following is the best, and one of he most simplest to learn and do …
But first, let’s just refresh exactly what we are looking for from our research…
We want to find a desperate crowd of starving people who we can
attract to our web pages without having to pay any advertising
fees, and we want them to arrive within 7 days of publishing
our sites … (we don’t want a lot do
we
Attracting visitors (traffic) for free is critical to why the following method of ‘niche’ market research is the absolute best … there is absolutely no point in finding starving crowds that we cannot get access to …
With that in mind, let me introduce you to the place where I do all of my niche market research …
EzineArticles.com is all you will ever need for researching potential demand in any niche.
Before I walk you through the actual research process, let me give a quick overview of the site …
EzineArticles is home to over 1 million articles covering virtually every subject known to man. Authors and web site owners write and submit articles to the site for others to read and ‘use’.
Why would they do this?
The articles submitted usually include links back to the author’s web pages. So that when someone reads the article, if they want to read more about the subject, they simply click on the link and are taken to the author’s web site.
So the author is posting articles on the Ezine Articles web site to draw traffic to his own site!
There is another reason also ...
Any web site owner can go to EzineArticles and copy and paste articles on to their own sites ... BUT, to avoid copyright issues, they must leave the authors links in the article and cannot change any part of the article ...
Effectively the articles provide web owners with a source of content for their pages.
When a web owner posts an article on his site, the author suddenly has a link from the site to his own, and the link may bring him traffic directly. There is also another advantage ... Google ranks sites based on the number of 'inbound' links a site has pointing to it. So if an author's article gets posted on many other web sites, his own site will rise up Google's rankings thanks to all the new links pointing to it!
Hopefully you followed all that, but if not, don't worry, we'll be covering the importance of 'backlinks' in a later module ...
NOW, there are TWO other HUGE Benefits to posting an article on Ezine Articles ...
Therefore if you use EzineArticles correctly, you can attract a ton of FREE visitors to your web site!
We'll cover the subject of how to use EzineArticles correctly for free traffic in a later module, but just to give you a taste, take a look at one of my Author Account stats ...
My articles in this account (you can have more than one author name and account) have been viewed a staggering 21,796 times! Like I say, we'll talk a lot more about "killer article marketing" tactics in the forthcoming traffic generation module ...
So, on to TODAY's HOMEWORK ... it's time for you to do your niche research! I want you to consider the POT OF GOLD I gave you above, the groups of starving people I identified as having a desperate need for information ... With those groups in mind, I want you to go to EzineArticles and research the various 'Article Categories' on the site in search of highly viewed articles ...
And if the people searching in that category for articles fit into the 'starving groups' above, you know you can sell them what they are looking for when they arrive at your site! (Module 2 is all about finding products to sell to the 'hot' niches you identify in today's homework!) Now you understand the reason behind the homework I'm asking you to do, so on with the exact steps you need to take ... The Article Categories Section appears at the top of the homepage and looks like this:
Hopefully just by looking at the categories above, you can match some of them to the 'Pot of Gold' above ... Click on one of the categories that you think meets the 'starving crowd' criteria, and a list of 'sub-categories' will appear:
Ok, you can see a list of sub-categories for "relationships" (there is a tip for you there) above. Click on each sub-category in turn. When you click on the sub-category, a page is returned with a list of the most recent articles posted in that sub-category. Click on the link for the top article. You are now taken to a page displaying that article. We are not really in this particular article, but we interested in some of the information displayed at the end of the article, so scroll down until you see a section called ... "Most Viewed Ezine Articles" (see the screenshot below) ...
The "Most Viewed Ezine Articles" section lists the 15 articles within that category that have received the most page views in the last 90 days. So for the Dating category, the 15 articles listed above have been the most popular. BUT ... the critical question is ... How many page views have the articles seen? They may be the most popular in the category, but if they have only been viewed say 100 times in 90 days, articles for this category are not going to bring many visitors to your site! THEREFORE ... CLICK on each of the Top 5 articles in turn to see their page view stats (you'll find them displayed right at the bottom of the article page ...
The screenshot above is taken from the bottom of the page for the most popular article in the dating category, you literally have to scroll down right to the bottom to find the information we need ... Wow! One single article has been viewed by 25,056 people in little over two months! I guess it would be safe to say that the dating niche has a lot of traffic potential! Take a look at say the top 5 articles and make some notes on the traffic volumes. Once you have done one sub category, repeat for another.
To complete this homework assignment, you are trying to identify at least 5 to 7 categories where articles posted in them regularly received over 750 page views in at least 90 days.
Don't expect to see thousands of page views every time ... for example, you won't want to be building a web site on philosophy based on the number one article in that category:
So there you have it, the ultimate research method for quickly identifying high traffic potential niches, it's Ezine Articles.
